Portals, Bowen Galleries 2008

A portal can be a possibility;

an opening;

a trajectory;

a small or ambiguous narrative;

and represent hope.

Stories and myths are portals.

So are soap operas

and other fictions.

Portals are entry points and exit points to cyber worlds – which can be all of the above, and at the same time are infinite and unquantifiable.

Much of human existence is quite ordinary and banal.Other parts of it are sad – because we hope for so much while treading the same fictional paths through a vast consumer culture. What we say and what we desire is a mismatch. There is a new fascination with quantum physics and outer space. The possibility that the entire human race could populate another planet is no longer an imaginary prospect. The collective obsession with this thought is a new kind of religion. Here the accepted and steadfast binaries of logic and spirit collapse.
